The following are select HIT Lab research initiatives that have focused on electronic health records (EHRs):
Usability assessment
We conducted a usability assessment of an EHR specifically designed for the HIV/AIDS population. Lab researchers surveyed and closely monitored physicians and support staff at HIV clinics across the United States to investigate their use of the system. We objectively determined the aspects of EHR functionality and design that met clinician and patient needs, and identified areas for improvement. Our findings informed the grant sponsor’s strategic overhaul of the EHR. In addition, an academic paper detailing the project has been accepted for publication in Health Informatics Journal (in press).
Meaningful use
The Lab completed a comprehensive policy and implementation analysis of electronic health records (EHRs) under meaningful use guidelines.
