Smarter Monitoring, Supported Aging: The Future of Connected Senior Care with VitalFriend

Authors: Charul Narain, MPH, Varsha Srivastava, PhD; Vandana Yadav, MS; Stan Kachnowski, PhD, MPA

Senior care systems across the United States are facing increasing operational and clinical pressures driven by aging populations, rising chronic disease burden, staffing shortages, fragmented monitoring systems, and growing caregiver workload. Assisted living facilities and long-term care organizations often rely on disconnected workflows, manual documentation, and reactive awareness models that contribute to delayed detection of changing health trends, avoidable hospitalizations, caregiver burnout, and rising healthcare costs.

VitalFriend is an automated remote patient monitoring and care coordination platform designed specifically for assisted living and long-term care environments. The platform combines passive monitoring, wearable integration, centralized dashboards, automated trend visualization and data summarization, automated documentation, and timely health information visibility into a unified ecosystem intended to support proactive, coordinated, and efficient senior care delivery.

HITLAB conducted an independent heuristic evaluation of the VitalFriend platform, Vital Buddy Watch, and mobile application using Jakob Nielsen’s Ten Usability Heuristics framework. The assessment examined usability, workflow alignment, interface clarity, system visibility, and caregiver experience across the platform ecosystem.
