Dynamic Cardiac Insights: No Extra Device Required
Cardiac health monitoring traditionally requires frequent visits to clinics or hospitals. Although several digital health tools exist to measure and monitor heart rhythms, few offer seamless integration with provider portals or deliver near real-time data updates to clinicians. FibriCheck addresses this gap by enabling patients to monitor their cardiac health conveniently and privately—without additional hardware—while offering providers timely, actionable insights. This model enhances efficiency and is poised to improve clinical outcomes.
The ongoing shortage of cardiologists and the growing demand for remote care continue to challenge cardiac health management. Clinicians, often overwhelmed, lack the capacity for continuous, detailed monitoring. This can lead to patient frustration and delays in care optimization. Without reliable tools to measure and track health metrics, critical insights may be missed. FibriCheck provides a solution that bridges this gap through an easy-to-use, evidence-based platform.
What Is FibriCheck & How Is It Helping?
FibriCheck is a digital health platform that enables heart rhythm monitoring using a smartphone camera. The technology, which is FDA-cleared and CE-marked (CE1639), leverages photoplethysmography (PPG) to detect cardiac rhythm irregularities—simply by having users place a finger over their phone’s camera lens.
With seamless integration into clinical workflows, FibriCheck helps detect and monitor atrial fibrillation (AF), supporting both initial diagnosis and ongoing management. The solution is backed by clinical accuracy rates exceeding 98% and validated by over 90 peer-reviewed studies.
Available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the FibriCheck app can categorize readings into regular rhythm, unclassified rhythm, or possible AF, providing both patients and providers with actionable insights.

FibriCheck can distinguish between regular rhythm, unclassified rhythm, and possible AF.
How It Works
Patients are onboarded to FibriCheck through a referral from their healthcare provider. They receive an email with a registration link and instructions. Once registered, patients use the app to record measurements independently, guided by clear step-by-step prompts. Whether newly diagnosed or managing a chronic condition, patients can easily engage with the app from home.

Evaluation of the FibriCheck App and Portal
Methodology
HITLAB experts conducted a heuristic evaluation of the mobile app for patients and platform for providers nested within a customer journey analysis. The customer journey analysis was based on trials and testings of the workflows specified by FibriCheck and certain questions that detailed the user experience of the workflows. The heuristic evaluation, performed as part of addressing the specific questions, used Jakob Nielsen’s usability principles, a widely recognized framework for assessing user interface design.
The evaluation examined the typical user experience from the perspectives of two user types:
Patient – 56-year old kindergarten teacher
Provider – 45-year old cardiologist
Additionally, HITLAB experts also conducted a thorough evaluation of FibriChecks presales materials meant for providers.
Findings/Strengths
User-Friendly Design: The app is intuitive and easy to use, even for first-time users. Instructions for taking measurements are clear, and the process is simple and quick.
Reliable Performance: The app accurately detects excessive motion during measurement, ensuring data reliability. Turnaround time for clinical report verification ranged between 2 to 12 hours.
Privacy and Independence: The app enables patients to record and submit data independently and privately, minimizing the need for clinic visits.
Provider Portal: The web-based platform offers an organized dashboard that highlights findings for abnormal readings, lists all registered patients, and includes prescription support.
Remote Monitoring: Secure and dynamic data updates support asynchronous remote care, which is essential for patients with limited access to in-person services.
Recommendations
To enhance the platform’s usability and effectiveness, HITLAB provided the following recommendations:
Improve Movement Detection Accuracy: Movement warnings should only trigger when necessary to avoid confusion or frustration.
Enhanced Onboarding Support: More guidance should be provided for elderly or non-tech-savvy users, especially during the measurement process.
Actionable Reports: Include patient demographics, context, and clear next steps for providers and patients post-monitoring period.
Platform Enhancements: Improve visibility and acknowledgment of notifications within the provider dashboard for better workflow integration.
Future Potential & Key Takeaways
FibriCheck exemplifies the future of remote cardiac care—one that is data-driven, evidence-based, and patient-centered. The platform allows for regular monitoring of high-risk patients, which could lead to earlier interventions and reduced risk of stroke and other cardiac events.
By enhancing usability and implementing HITLAB’s recommendations, FibriCheck can further increase its clinical impact and user satisfaction. Its potential to reduce care fragmentation, support near continuous monitoring, and deliver real-time insights positions it as a vital tool in the evolving landscape of digital health.
“Digital tools like FibriCheck aren’t just improving how we collect cardiac data—they’re fundamentally shifting the paradigm toward more proactive, personalized, and preventative care.” — Stan Kachnowski, Chair, HITLAB
With continued refinement and integration into care pathways, FibriCheck is well-positioned to become a cornerstone of modern cardiac monitoring—empowering patients and enabling providers to deliver timely, effective care.
