Heuristic Evaluation of Breathwrk: Breathing exercises App
Stress levels among U.S. adults have significantly increased over the past decade. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), approximately 60% of adults reported high stress levels in 2015. By 2023, this number had climbed to 75%, driven by rising financial pressures, health-related concerns, and social instability. In 2024, 43% of adults reported feeling more anxious than they did the previous year—highlighting a growing public health concern.
Chronic stress is closely linked to a range of negative health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and cardiovascular problems. In response to this escalating issue, breathing exercises have gained recognition as a scientifically validated method for stress reduction.
Research indicates that controlled breathing techniques can lower cortisol levels, decrease blood pressure, and improve emotional regulation. Even brief, consistent practice—just 5 to 10 minutes a day—can enhance focus, foster resilience, and promote relaxation. As such, mindful breathing has emerged as a powerful, accessible tool for improving mental well-being and managing daily stress. One app that supports the development and practice of these techniques is Breathwrk.
