HITLAB has entered into a strategic partnership with Quai.MD, an advanced clinical navigation platform designed to streamline decision-making in emergency and acute-care environments. The collaboration will focus on an independent heuristic evaluation of Quai.MD’s web-based platform, often described as a “clinical GPS” for physicians. By embedding explainable, AI-driven pathways directly into electronic health records (EHRs), Quai.MD equips clinicians to make faster, safer, and more consistent decisions in high-pressure care environments.

The evaluation will examine how effectively the platform supports safer, faster, and more consistent decision-making, while also reducing administrative burden and improving team coordination. By focusing on usability and workflow integration, HITLAB’s study will generate actionable insights to strengthen Quai.MD’s adoption readiness across emergency and acute-care settings.

Why This Matters

Emergency departments and acute-care settings demand split-second decisions, often with incomplete data and immense pressure. Nearly 30% of diagnostic errors occur in these settings, with approximately 6% of emergency cases in the U.S. involving missed diagnoses, frequently for critical conditions such as stroke and sepsis.1 These errors carry profound implications: compromised patient outcomes, increased liability, and higher healthcare costs.

Concurrently, physician burnout remains a pervasive challenge. In 2021, more than 60% of physicians reported symptoms of burnout, driven in large part by the administrative burdens of electronic documentation.2 These factors underscore the urgent need for innovations that reduce variability in care, minimize documentation load, and enhance physician confidence.

“Supporting clinicians with the right tools at the right time is no longer optional — it’s essential,” said Stan Kachnowski, Chair of HITLAB. “Quai.MD’s approach to embedding evidence-based, explainable pathways directly into the EHR is exactly the kind of innovation we need to reduce variation in care and strengthen physician confidence.”

What is Quai.MD?

Quai.MD is a next-generation clinical navigation platform that functions like a GPS for healthcare. When physicians enter patient symptoms, vital signs, or test results, the system instantly generates an evidence-based MetaPathway™ — a guided sequence of diagnostic and therapeutic steps.

Unlike traditional decision-support tools, Quai.MD is not a “black box.” Its explainable AI provides transparent reasoning behind each recommendation, enabling clinicians to understand, trust, and collaborate around care decisions. This transparency builds confidence and aligns multidisciplinary teams.

In addition, the platform also incorporates smart documentation tools that automatically create structured notes and billing codes, significantly reducing the time spent on data entry. Combined with its scalable Agentic AI architecture, Quai.MD integrates seamlessly with complementary technologies such as Ambient AI scribes and Diagnostic AI solutions, positioning itself as an emerging powerhouse in AI-driven clinical workflows.

HITLAB’s role

HITLAB’s evaluation will employ Jakob Nielsen’s Ten Usability Heuristics, a gold-standard framework for assessing usability and workflow fit. Over a multi-day review, HITLAB experts will simulate real-world emergency physician scenarios to assess:

  • Ease of Use Under Pressure: Whether the interface supports clear, rapid decision-making.
  • Clarity and Explainable AI: How transparent recommendations align with clinical tasks and maintain user control.
  • Workflow and EHR Integration: The degree to which Quai.MD reduces cognitive load and embeds seamlessly into existing systems.
  • Documentation and Team Coordination: The effectiveness of smart documentation and structured pathways in aligning teams and reducing errors.

This structured analysis will produce evidence-based insights and actionable recommendations, strengthening Quai.MD’s adoption readiness and maximizing its impact in emergency and acute-care workflows.

Quai.MD’s achievements to date

Quai.MD is already making an impact with multiple recognitions and strategic partnerships:

  • Competitive Grants: Funding from the Israel Innovation Authority and the Bird Foundation, both highly selective programs supporting transformative technologies.
  • Clinical Partnerships: Commercial use in four Emergency Departments at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), with pilots underway at leading institutions such as Mayo Clinic.
  • Innovation Recognition: Recipient of the Mayo Clinic Presidential Solution Innovation Award, granted to only a select group of companies with potential to transform care.
  • Advisory Strength: Backed by respected clinicians and healthcare leaders guiding refinement and adoption.

These milestones position Quai.MD as an emerging leader in the clinical decision-support space, uniquely combining explainable AI with practical workflow integration.

Looking Ahead

Through this partnership, HITLAB and Quai.MD aim to ensure the platform is not only technologically advanced but also usable, trusted, and adoption-ready for the settings where it matters most. The heuristic evaluation will offer critical feedback on how clinicians experience the platform, enabling refinements that further improve safety, efficiency, and satisfaction.

As healthcare systems continue shifting toward value-based care, tools like Quai.MD are poised to play a central role: reducing diagnostic errors, alleviating administrative burdens, and enabling consistent, evidence-based treatment.
